A woman has died following a house fire in Newton Aycliffe.
County Durham and Darlington fire and rescue service, paramedics and police attended the blaze at the property in Honister Place shortly before 1pm today.
The 65-year-old victim, reported to have been trapped in the house, was taken by ambulance to Darlington Memorial Hospital and died a short time later. She is not being named at this stage.
A 37-year-old man who is not believed to be seriously hurt was also taken to the hospital where he remains under observation.
People living in the neighbouring properties were evacuated as a precaution.
Police and the fire and rescue service are carrying out a joint investigation to establish the cause of the blaze.
