Newton Aycliffe’s cricket team suffered their first defeat of the season on Bank Holiday Monday, just two days after beating Hartlepool’s second team in the NYSD League Division Two.
Aycliffe’s first XI beat Hartlepool by five wickets on Saturday.
The visitors were 138 all out with Colin Myers taking an impressive six wickets for 24.
John Cavanagh (sponsored by CVO Fire) then won his third consecutive man-of-the-match award for a brilliant unbeaten 65, which contained nine boundaries and four sixes, as Aycliffe scored 139 for five.
But Aycliffe’s fine start to the new season came to an end on Monday when they lost by six wickets at Stokesley’s second team on Monday.
Aycliffe were 133 all out – with Sam Telford (35), Tom Young (20) and Sean Morgan (17) the top scorers – but Stokesley racked up 136 from just four wickets and 33.5 overs.
And it was the same story for Aycliffe’s second team – who also won on Saturday, but then lost on Monday, in Division Three action.
They scored 173 for eight at Northallerton on Saturday, with Adam Gittins (37), John Wardle (27 not out) and Jack Slatcher (19) scoring well.
Then 16-year-old leg spinner Patrick Howe won the man-of-the-match award with a three-wicket haul as Aycliffe bowled the hosts out for 114 from 45 overs. Danny Weldon also took three for 28.
But the second team couldn’t make it back-to-back Bank Holiday wins as they crashed to a narrow five-run defeat at home to Blackhall’s second XI on Monday.
The visitors were 79 all out from just 22.2 overs, with man-of-the-match Jack Slatcher taking five wickets for 32.
Aycliffe were bowled out for 74 from 33.4 overs, with Trevor Shingler managing 34 with the bat.
• Aycliffe’s firs team are at home to Normanby Hall’s second XI at Aycliffe Sports Club this Saturday (9th May) from 1pm, while the second team go to Shildon to take on their first team this weekend.
