A number of businesses and people have offered their vehicles and services for the annual Santa Tours, following Aycliffe Today’s successful online and social media campaign.
Great Aycliffe Town Council says it should now have enough vehicles for the traditional Aycliffe event on December 24 after local firms came forward.
Humbug councillors had tried to scrap the Santa Tours before Aycliffe Today whipped up a social media storm.
But they were left with egg on their faces after Durham Police chief Mike Barton told them their reasons for replacing the ‘tour’ element of the tours was down to a “narrow and misguided interpretation of traffic law”.
The council now says it should have enough vehicles to “provide the tours as far as possible as they always have been”, but is still inviting offers to ensure they have back-up support.
Town clerk Andrew Bailey said: “The same thing with volunteers, we should have enough as a number of people have kindly volunteered in addition to our regular volunteers, so again, any others can go on the list as standby or can help with the preparations as Santa’s go out on the evening, all offers of help will be welcome.”

Following last week’s meeting of the Recreation Committee, the events sub-committee is now due to reconvene with an emergency meeting on Monday, October 29, before full council meeting on October 31. Members of the public are not allowed to speak at sub-committee meetings.
