Martin Gray reckons the Tyne-Wear derby is the biggest in the country.
Newcastle lack horns with arch rivals Sunderland at St James’ Park on Sunday lunchtime.
And former Black Cat Gray, who has experienced the hostile rivalry, says it’s a game both sets of fans look forward to.
The 40-year-old, who now runs his own Academy and is Greenfield School’s director of football, began his career with Sunderland in 1990 and played 89 games for the Wearsiders, but admits his record against the Mags wasn’t the best.
In a Video Interview with Aycliffe Today, Gray said: “It’s unique.
“The hostile reception off the coach, walking from the coach to the changing room you get abused and you get things thrown at you, it gets you pumped up.
“You have to have had that opportunity to experience it, mentally before and after the game.”
Gray admits Sunderland have a hard time of it in recent derbies, but is buoyed by the revival under Martin O’Neill.
“The Sunderland fans have had it tough over the last few seasons,” he said.
“If you look at what Martin O’Neill has done, he’s done very, very well. The level of football, the confidence and buzz around Sunderland now is great.”
