Sean Tarling insists Aycliffe’s ultimate aim is to secure a top-six finish in the Northern League first division this season.
The Newtonians are unbeaten in their last nine games – but have drawn their last two – and hope to continue that run at home to Marske United at Moore Lane Park this Saturday.
Aycliffe remain sixth in the top flight, four points clear of seventh-placed Bishop Auckland, although other teams have games in hand.
But skipper Tarling reckons having points on the board gives Aycliffe the advantage – and he says Allan Oliver’s men are all united in their ambition.
“The lads have all agreed, we want to finish in that top six,” insists Tarling.
“We’re there or thereabouts, teams have got games in hand but there are teams left in the Vase who are going to have a backlog of fixtures, we’ve got points on the board so that’s where we’re aiming.
“It’s a home game now and hopefully a chance for us to get three points on the board.
“We’re getting there. We’re getting some good lads back, Danny (Mellanby) is playing well again, Josh Gray is back, so it’s positive.”
