This year’s Brainwave@NETPark science festival has been hailed as the best-ever with some 4000 people taking the opportunity to get up and close with the latest eye-popping technology.
The weird and wonderful, including robotic football, a dalek and bendy mirrors, were all there during two public days of hands-on fun (July 14 and 15).
Brainwave is organised by Durham County Council’s business arm, Business Durham, and held at NETPark, the North East Technology Park.
Highlights included action robots, the North East’s largest mobile planetarium, mirror mazes and even crazy inventions with youngsters taking part in hands-on and even ears-on experiments through a myriad of illusions and spells. The legendary John Kilcoyne was on hand to demonstrate toothpaste for elephants and Dr Bunhead of Brainiacs fame entertained families with plenty of noisy explosions – the ultimate in science stand-up!
Cabinet member for regeneration and economic development Cllr Neil Foster, said: “Yet again Brainwave proved to be an outstanding success. The festival is a platform to get our youngest residents animated about careers in science and technology and NETPark is the perfect backdrop.
“As a local authority we are committed to attracting, retaining and nurturing cutting edge technologies. We want our residents to get a flavour of what the world can offer and Brainwave is simply genius.”
The event was supported by the Institute of Physics.
