Aycliffe gained revenge for their FA cup exit at the hands of Washington with a narrow 3-2 victory in the league.
Washington had a slight edge early on, but there were few chances for either side. Washington broke the deadlock on 22 minutes when Mark Davison turned in a low cross to make it 0-1.
Aycliffe were pegged back for a while, but they then upped their tempo and were rewarded when captain Paul Garthwaite equalised with a low shot after being put through by a header from John Campbell on 35 minutes.
The roles were reversed two minutes later when Garthwaite passed to Campbell who finished into the corner of the net for a half-time score of 2-1.
Aycliffe were in the ascendency in the second half and made it tell when a quickly taken free kick on 65 minutes by Jordan Laidler set up Dennis Knight who unleased a powerful shot from 25 yards to give Aycliffe some breathing space at 3-1.
Washington tried to scrap their way back into the game, and made it 3-2 in the 91st minute when following a short corner, a cross was headed in by Davison for his and Washington’s second.
Aycliffe saw out the remainder of injury time to consolidate their third place in the league.
John Campbell remained Division 1 top scorer with 12 goals.

October 12, 2016 at 4:11 pmInnocuous challenge got Dennis Knight sent off. Well as someone who witnessed it I would replace the word innocuous by disgraceful. Knight has now been sent off three times this season. Does that give a clue to the way he plays the game ?He is a nasty piece of work who should get a suitable ban to match his disciplinary recod
