Newton Aycliffe NPT Sergeant Mark Edwards continues his weekly blog on Aycliffe Today…
Here we are with the next instalment of ‘Aycliffe Blue’ – this entry is slightly belated owing to the Easter weekend and other ongoing issues that have tied myself and the teams up.
So, what’s new in the town?
The last thing I want to do is bombard readers with statistics, but on this occasion I would like to try and put into perspective where we stand with Policing in Newton Aycliffe compared with the rest of the County.
Overall crime has reduced by 4% (as of the end of March this year) when compared to this time last year, and our current crime detection rate stands at 40%, which puts Aycliffe (including Sedgefield and Shildon) the second highest in the County!
I appreciate that these numbers mean nothing if you have been a victim of crime, but I’m just trying to highlight how committed the officers and teams that work in this area are to addressing crime.
So, with the numbers out of the way, I would like to make a couple of witness appeals on behalf of colleagues…
Overnight on Saturday 31st March, into 1st April, a wing mirror on a light blue SEAT IBIZA was broken off. The vehicle was parked in Finchale Road, Newton Aycliffe opposite Gregory Court.
Overnight on Friday 30th March, into Saturday 31st, the glass to a window of the changing rooms at the Sports Pavilion, Simpasture Park, Barrington Road, Newton Aycliffe was smashed.
The investigating Officer for both of these offences is Pc 2563 Paul Elliott, and any information can be forwarded to him on 101 and then asking to be put through to him.
A burglary was reported in the Guthrum Place area during the early hours of Saturday 7th April, in which a WII games console was taken. A piece of concrete had been thrown through the kitchen window and entry was gained. Anyone in possession of any information is asked to contact either myself or the NPT at Aycliffe.
The team are also investigating the theft of a catalytic converter from the compound of a unit on Horndale Avenue – this happened between 10-10.30pm on Thursday 5th April. Access was gained by cutting through a perimeter fence and the suspects have then cut away the catalytic converter from the exhaust system. Leads have been identified which are being progressed however any information is sought as to who may be responsible.
Any witnesses can contact myself on [email protected]
Following a spate of crimes at the waste transfer site on the Business Park the team recently conducted several pro-active patrols and two males were detained after they were disturbed inside the compound.
Anthony Trevor Smith, 50, and Billy Jo Wallis, 34, both from the Darlington area, were charged with the offence.
There’s a few things to digest there so will leave it there for now. Don’t forget to check us out on Facebook or Twitter!
Be good!
