Newton Aycliffe NPT Sergeant Mark Edwards continues his weekly blog on Aycliffe Today…
Here we are at week three – how time flies! What’s been happening in the world of Aycliffe?
You may be aware that during 2011 members of the team secured funding through the GAMP for a community cinema. Basically this consists of a projector and large screen that can be transported wherever required.
We regularly hold events at various venues around the town which are entirely FREE of charge.
Last week saw such an event at Greenfields Art College and today at Neville Parade Community Centre – the film shown was Disney’s ‘Tangled’ (not a preferred film of choice for myself but I guess it aims for the more intellectually minded).
The turn out was quite good I am pleased to say. This initiative, the brainchild of our very own PCSO’s Mike Welch and Amy Jorgeson, will continue with details of upcoming movies and locations published in advance.
For those of you familiar with PC Helen Inglis who is (or rather, was) the Dedicated Beat Officer for the Shafto and St Mary’s Ward – Helen moved on to pastures new earlier this year and we are awaiting her replacement. Details of who he or she is will be announced (hopefully) in the near future. In the meantime Scott Hodgson continues to fly the flag with assistance from the rest of the team.
The Response Officers successfully detained two adult males during the early hours of Saturday morning, on suspicion of going equipped for stealing after they were found within the compound of an industrial unit up to no good. They have been assisting our Priority and Serious Crime Team with enquiries (as the saying goes!).
Members of the team have been diligently working away on CRASBO applications for some of our prolific anti-social behaviour merchants – if you’re wondering what a CRASBO is just think ‘ASBO with a criminal thrown in front of it’. These are orders that are granted on conviction in the courts so fingers crossed and watch this space.
Today is the Shrove Tuesday Ball Game in Sedgefield, when members of the Aycliffe NPT will be patrolling alongside our colleagues in the Sedgefield and Shildon NPT’s.
As I understand it this is a tradition that is now some 900-plus-years-old in which a ball is kicked through the streets with the goals been either of the streams at either end of the village.
I guess ‘free for all’ is one way of describing it – ‘fun’ is possibly another!
Until next time.
