Newton Aycliffe NPT Sergeant Mark Edwards continues his regular blog on Aycliffe Today…
Hello everyone,
I’d just like to start with highlighting that in the 12 months or so since May last year there has been a 42% reduction in all incidents of anti-social behaviour across the force area.
In the Shafto St Mary’s ward here in Newton Aycliffe we have seen a 53% reduction.
There have been new processes introduced and implemented in Durham Constabulary during that time that have involved closer working relationships between the Police and our partner agencies.
Anti-social behaviour has a significant impact upon the quality of life of local residents and I hope this demonstrates how committed we are to tackling this on the team.
Reports of nuisance behaviour relating to the use of off-road trials bikes have been on the increase of late and this particular type of incident can be a real bug-bear to all it affects.
The Police do have powers to deal with such issues however we need help from our communities with information in identifying offenders.
Legislation allows Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers to seize vehicles found to be used in an anti-social manner providing that relevant warnings have been administered first.
On Tuesday this week members of the team attended an address in Silverdale Place where such a bike was seized from a 19-year-old male – this arose from information received connecting a number of reports to this address. The bike will be scrapped within a matter of days.
Some of you out there may be thinking ‘Wow, big deal…there are proper criminals out there…’
But for that one 19-year-old merchant of ASB-related activity – he’s now two wheels lighter and will have to ply his trade by other means.
Now for some juicy gossip I guess!
Neil Paul Brown, 26, from Newton Aycliffe, appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court charged with an assault on a female. He was committed to prison for 16 weeks which was suspended for 18 months and ordered to pay compensation to the value of £150 to the victim.
Mark Aaron Dial, 18, also from Aycliffe, appeared at the Magistrates Court charged with assault by beating, assaulting a Police Constable in the execution of his duty, and for using threatening words and behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress. He was found guilty and sentenced to do 80 hours of compulsory unpaid work in the community, and to be supervised by the Probation Service for a twelve month rehabilitation period. Compensation costs of £200 were also added to the sentence.
Benjamin Alan Cairnes, 26, from North Ormesby, appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court in relation to driving without due care and attention whilst in the area. He was fined £50, and ordered to pay £85 costs.
Matthew Paul Gibson, 20, from Aycliffe, appeared at the Magistrates Court charged with drink driving. He was fined £220, ordered to pay £85 costs, and disqualified from driving for a period of no less than 20 months.
A 16-year-old male from the town was arrested in relation to the theft of a pedal cycle last week is currently on bail.
Hope that wets your appetites for now, more next time.
Be good!

July 1, 2012 at 12:29 pmHi Mark,
We live in Arncliffe Place and have noticed a reduction in the amount of trial bikes passing to the rear green area of our house,so well done there. However,on the rare evenings that the weather is decent the area along the Burn is a meeting place for youths who are obviously drinking.I came home from work at about 11.30 pm on Friday 29th of June and one of these “events” was underway and was so noisy I could hardly hear my tv.My wife says it started about half past 9 and it went on till about 12.30 when it rained.I just wondered if it would be at all possible to have an officer patrol this area during summer evenings? Thanks.Neale Cooley.
