Newtonian Jason Steele is one of a 40-man squad named by England ahead of the Under-21 European Championships this summer.
The squad is expected to be trimmed to 23 later this week before a training camp in Turkey for a week spanning May and June.
The Championships, held in Israel, run from Sunday June 2 to Wednesday June 19, the day the fixtures are announced for next season’s npower Championship.
Steele was Boro’s only ever-present in the league last season, playing all 46 games. He only missed one game all season, away to Preston in the Carling Cup.
The 22-year-old was named Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year by the Boro fans.
