Jason Steele is looking forward to his second major England Under-21 tournament after the Newtonian was named in Stuart Pearce’s squad for this summer’s European Championships.
The Middlsbrough goalkeeper, Aycliffe born and bred, will round off an impressive 12 months when he takes part in his final England youth tournament in Israel next month.
Steele was part of the Team GB squad which played in last summer’s Olympic Games, and the 22-year-old went on to become Boro’s only ever-present in the 2012-13 season.
He was drafted in to the England senior squad for a training session in February, to cover for the injured Joe Hart – a “fantastic honour”, said Steele at the time.
And two weeks ago, he was voted Player and Young Player of the Year by supporters at the club’s end-of-season presentation evening.
He then rounded off a fine year this week when he made the 23-man England squad for Israel.
Steele told Aycliffe Today: “I’m absolutely over the moon, it’s always a tremendous honour to be called up for your country and to be involved in another Under-21 tournament is something I’m really looking forward to.
“It will be my final youth tournament so it’d be great to go out with some silverware!”
