Social workers from across County Durham celebrated the achievements of their profession at an event at County Hall this week.
To mark today’s World Social Work Day, Durham County Council invited social workers from both adult and children’s services to reflect on the role they play in society and how the work they do makes a real difference to the lives of people across the region.
Cllr Lucy Hovvels, Cabinet member for adult and health services, said: “This is a fabulous opportunity to celebrate the amazing work of our social workers who are so critical in supporting the health and wellbeing of our adult population in Durham.
“Their work in the community to maximise independence and support to those most vulnerable ensures that the best opportunities are available to those most in need.
“Social workers make a real difference and positively change the lives of service users, families and carers. World Social Work Day provides a great opportunity to stop and reflect and to recognise the work of the staff who undertake this challenging and demanding role.”
Cllr Olwyn Gunn, Cabinet member for children and young people, said: “World Social Work Day is a great opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate the challenging jobs of social workers in our communities.
“Every single day they are supporting families, every single day they are supporting children and young people. We can’t highlight their achievements every single day, but today we can and we do.”
