Newton Aycliffe Rugby Club are hoping to repeat their flying start to a season later this summer – but maintain it throughout the campaign.
It was the sort of start that only the most optimistic of Aycliffe fans would have hoped for.
But Aycliffe manager Cymon Lee (pictured) says the side must look at the bigger picture.
The Newtonian started last season with an impressive nine wins out of the first 11 games, including a stunning victory’s over Houghton away and a 90-0 away win at West Hartlepool.
Matching that would be great for a side which is battling with injuries to the key players before the season even starts.
Lee said momentum was important but it was important to look at the whole year.
“I know last year if had won the three last games, we would have made the promotion places and losing the cup final was very disappointing,” Lee said.
“What I know in sport, if you get on a roll you get a confidence that is unfounded.
“Teams, though, that win the championships have to come back from real challenges. If we are going to be any good at the end of the year we are going to have to keep getting up.
“I think once the team starts to train so hard for such a long time they look forward to the first game in a few weeks’ time we will be right up and ready for the season, so you need to look at the big picture.
“The thing with us we have been hampered with injuries and it has been disrupting. But guys really want to play rugby.
“But the team, especially the back line, is undoubtedly one of the best if not the best in the league, and once the forwards start clicking we will be a hand full for any team.”
Aycliffe train every Monday and Thursday night (from 7pm) at Aycliffe Sports Club.
