Household waste recycling centres in County Durham will switch to their winter opening times from next month.
From Sunday, October 1 until Saturday March 31, recycling centres owned by Durham County Council and managed by HW Martin – including Heighington Lane in Newton Aycliffe – will be open from 9am until 3.30pm.
Recycling centres accept a range of household materials including soil and rubble, wood, plasterboard, scrap metal, car batteries, batteries, TVs and monitors, fridges, textiles, shoes, glass, cardboard, paper, plastics, cartons, cans, cooking oil and general waste that cannot be recycled.
Trade and commercial waste is not permitted.
Residents visiting with a van, pickup or minibus, or towing a trailer need a waste permit to enter the sites. Three permits can be requested at one time and can be applied for online at www.durham.gov.uk/householdpermit or by calling 03000 261 000 during office hours.
All centres are closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
