Young people are being encouraged to get involved in a new competition for those who love skateboards, BMX bikes and micro-scooters.
Funding from Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership (GAMP) is being used to fund three local ‘jams’ set to keep young people occupied during the school holidays.
The competitions will last between three and four hours, depending on numbers, and will be supported by Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre, Durham County Council Sport and Leisure Services and youth work staff from Durham County Council’s One Point service.
Competitions are being held locally in the town park throughout the school holidays and young people are urged to get involved whether it’s in the organisation, becoming a judge or participating themselves. All those taking part will be given the opportunity to work towards an Asdan accreditation.
Brian Riley, GAMP coordinator, said: “We were happy to support this event because the young people of Newton Aycliffe told us this type of thing is exactly the sort of event they need across the summer to give them something to focus on. The fact that they can work towards an accreditation at the same time is wonderful.”
The first event ‘Urban Games’ which is part of a national Community Games programme to celebrate the Olympics will take place on Thursday, July 26 and will see DYNAMIX lead a scooter, BMX, skateboard and in-line skating event. Baseball coaching with the Newton Aycliffe Spartans, On the Ball Football camps, break dancing workshops with KDANZ and a climbing wall provide the entertainment.
£5,605 funding from GAMP’s area budget has been match funded by Durham County Council’s One Point Service, Community Games funding and Durham County Council’s Sport and Leisure Services.
