Police have thanked football fans after England’s devastating World Cup defeat passed without trouble.
Officers were on patrol across County Durham and Darlington last night as England faced Croatia in the World Cup semi-final.
However, despite losing 2 – 1, spirits remained high across the county with no major incidents being reported to police.
Superintendent Colin Williamson, from Durham Constabulary, said: “We want to thank everyone for their fantastic behaviour last night.
“Fans were obviously cheesed off that England didn’t make it through to Sunday’s final. However, most people behaved impeccably and we had no major football-related disorder.
“We’ve got another busy weekend coming up with Durham Miners’ Gala and Seaham Carnival. We’ve also got the third-place play off against Belgium on Saturday – let’s use it as a chance to celebrate England’s success and show them how proud we are of how far they’ve come.
“Whatever you’re doing this weekend, our officers will be out and about keeping you safe and we hope you all have a fantastic time.”
