Police are hunting a man who terrified shop staff with a knife before making off with a quantity of cigarettes.
As reported on Aycliffe Today yesterday, the raid took place at the McColl’s store at Washington Crescent at around 2pm on Saturday.
The man – described as white, slim and about 5ft 7ins tall – reportedly stormed the newsagents wielding a large knife.
He allegedly demanded cash from the till but when staff refused he jumped over the counter and grabbed cigarettes before making off.
The suspect had cropped ginger hair and covered his face with a green balaclava, police say.
The Durham Constabulary helicopter hovered over Aycliffe for more than an hour after the incident while police cars swarmed the area.
Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101.
