Ofsted Inspectors have praised all aspects of Durham County Council’s Fostering Service and have taken the unusual step of making no recommendations for improvement, cabinet has heard.
In awarding the service with the highest possible rating of outstanding, an Ofsted report highlighted that the service provides young people with outstanding outcomes and ensures that young people’s experiences of care are very positive, Improving their life chances.
Cabinet members heard yesterday (Wednesday April 18) that the fostering service places emphasis on a strong commitment to listening to young people and helping them shape the way the service operates as well as making sure young people are well supported to make the transition into adulthood.
Cllr Claire Vasey, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “This Ofsted inspection highlighted a service the authority should be proud of and this glowing report is testament to the hard work of all involved.”
The report highlights the close monitoring of procedures which ensure the service continues to work in the best interests of young people and praised the panel which makes a significant contribution to the safety and well-being of the youngsters.
Inspectors noted that it is a real strength of the fostering service that it strives for continuous improvement and in praising all areas inspectors took the unusual step of making no recommendations.
Inspectors made the following comments about the following areas:
Helping children to be healthy, Foster carers clearly understand their responsibilities for promoting a healthy lifestyle for young people in their care.
Protecting children from harm and neglect and helping them stay safe, Young people consistently said they felt safe in their placements with foster carers.
Helping children achieve well and enjoy what they do, the service has some exceptional foster carers and their professional colleagues hold them in high regard.
Helping children make a positive contribution, Young people are strongly encouraged to share their goals, wishes and aspirations for their futures and contact with natural families is strongly promoted.
Cabinet members received a copy of the full Ofsted report which declared the service outstanding.
