Making history…
In 1930, Bernard Matthews, the founder of Bernard Matthews Farms Limited, a company that is best-known for farming turkeys and producing turkey products was born. Matthews died in November 2010.
In 1958, The Quarry Men performed at the Cavern Club, in Liverpool, (this was the bands only performance at the club). It was three years later when they appeared again at the Cavern but under their new name – The Beatles.
In 1965, twice-serving Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill passed away aged 90, after failing to recover from a stroke. Churchill first served his country when he took over from outgoing PM Neville Chamberlain in 1940, and was a steadfast figure in helping his country defeat Germany during World War II. His inspiring speeches and broadcasts during the war are regarded as reason enough behind Britain’s resolute stance and refusal to consider defeat and in 2002, Churchill topped a poll as the Greatest Briton of all time.
In 1989, Ted Bundy, the confessed serial killer, was put to death in Florida’s electric chair for the 1978 kidnap-murder of 12-year-old Kimberly Leach.
In 1995, the prosecution gave its opening statement at the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Simpson, a football player from San Francisco, was accused of the double-murder of his former partner and her friend in 1994, but on October 3rd 1995, Simpson was found not guilty of both charges.
In 2001, Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Mandelson resigned from the Cabinet over the passports-for-cash scandal.
In 2005, the iTunes Music Store announced it had reached 250 million songs sold.
Celebrating…
Brooklyn crooner Neil Diamond is 71 today. Diamond is most famous for his hits ‘Sweet Caroline,’ ‘Cracklin’ Rosie’ and ‘Love on the Rocks.’
Comedian Adrian Edmondson is 55 today. Famed for starring in comedy shows ‘The Young Ones,’ and ‘Bottom,’ in the 80s and 90s, Edmondson is also married to comedienne Jennifer Saunders.
British pianist, bandleader, singer, composer and television presenter Jools Holland is 54 today. Holland was a founding member of the band ‘Squeeze’ and currently hosts the ‘Later…with Jools Holland’ music-based show on BBC.
Comedian Vic Reeves is 53 today. Born Jim Muir, in Leeds, the comedy partner of Bob Mortimer moved to Darlington aged five and attended Eastbourne School before chasing his dream in London. Reeves and Mortimer starred in many different comedy shows and sketches, and are famed for hosting BBC panel show, ‘Shooting Stars.’
Actress and singer Tatyana Ali is 33 today. Ali shot to prominence in US sitcom ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ in 1990 and released her debut album ‘Kiss the Sky’ in 1998, with her second single from the record ‘Boy You Knock me Out’ reaching number three in the UK singles chart.

In 1958, Elvis Presley was at number one in the UK singles chart with ‘Jailhouse Rock.’ It became the first ever single to enter the chart at the top position and was Presley’s second UK chart-topper.
In 1998, Oasis went to number one in the UK singles chart with ‘All Around the World.’ The longest running-time for a UK number one with a total duration of nine minutes 38 seconds came from the hit album, ‘Be Here Now.’
In 1999, The Offspring went to the top of the UK singles chart with ‘Pretty Fly, For a White Guy.’ Taken from their fifth studio album ‘Americana,’ the single was a chart-topping hit in 10 other countries.
In 2003, Girls Aloud were number one in the UK singles chart with ‘Sound Of The Underground,’ their debut hit after being chosen as the winners of ITV Talent Show Pop Idol.
