Bogey-man Michael Mackay scored twice for Consett as Newton Aycliffe crashed to their 11th defeat of the season tonight.
The former Hartlepool United forward, previously targeted twice by Aycliffe boss Allan Oliver, punished the Newtonians with two second-half goals at Moore Lane Park.
It was another cruel blow for the Newtonians, with nothing much between the two sides until Mackay’s intervention.
In fact, winger Fred Woodhouse almost put Aycliffe ahead with an outrageous, Tony Yeboah-like drive which shaved the post after an uneventful first half.
But Mackay put the Steelmen ahead, and as Aycliffe pressured for an equaliser, the prolific forward sealed three points with a 93rd-minute clincher in front of just 108 people at MLP.
The win lifted Consett, who were just three places above bottom-of-the-table Aycliffe before the game, seven points clear of the Newtonians, who have now won one, drawn one and lost 11 of their opening 13 games.
