Phil Wilson says Hitachi’s decision to appointment a new plant manager for the eagerly-awaited Newton Aycliffe site shows their intent.
The Sedgefield MP, who played a major part in helping to bring the Intercity Express Programme (IEP) to County Durham, says Darren Cumner’s arrival is good news, after recent negative speculation doubting the deal.
The government is yet to officially sign the £4.5bn IEP – but Hitachi Europe say it’s not a case of if it goes through, but when.
And Mr Wilson told Aycliffe Today: “Darren’s appointment is another positive step and a good sign that things are moving forward.
“Once the contract is signed everything will fall into place and things will start to happen.
“What the open day did prove is just how much work has been going on behind the scenes – it’s all there, it’s all ready, and it’s just going to happen.”
Mr Wilson also spoke to Aycliffe Today about Thursday’s impressive construction open day, attended by more than 400 business bosses at the Xcel Cenre.
“Some of the detail was very interesting, and it was over-subscribed, with more than 400 firms there, so it just goes to show the potential of it.
“I know the big question is ‘when is it going to happen?’. This is a big financial deal, a lot of planning involved and a lot of strategy, so if it’s taking a little bit longer, fine, I’d rather than and get it right than it not happen at all.
“What I thought was very interesting at the open day was Hitachi’s plans to include a research and development centre at the plant, which proves that they’re here to stay.
“There will be a lot of opportunities for Aycliffe companies. It will come down to value for money, as in all walks of life, but one of the reasons Hitachi came here is because they know the skills are here, and that there are companies here that can help out.
“Best of luck to everyone – I think they’ve got as much chance of getting them as anyone else.”
