Newton Aycliffe Sports Club hosted bottom of the League Willington Queens at Moore Lane in a game that needed to be won to maintain their status at the top of Division 2. The home side wasted no time in setting out their stall with an early shot from Chris Jones forcing the keeper to make a good save. It took just a few minutes more to break the deadlock, Chris Jones again showing his determination to turn the Queens defence and slot home to make it 1-0 after just 5 minutes.
Willington however responded well with a break down the left hand side saw a shot fly goalwards only to come back off the post for the hosts to breathe a sigh of relief. The home side wasted a few chances with both Chris Jones and David Teder coming close. However, Willington took advantage on the 35 minute mark, with a corner that drifted in and hit the cross bar and as the ball was headed back into the area the ball was scrambled over the line to make it 1-1. Sports Club continued to make chances before the break, David Teder again shooting high over the bar. A forced substitution saw Ryan Stonehouse replaced by Chase McMullen, whose first touch was to take a free kick from 25 yards which he struck cleanly past the Willington goalkeeper to make it 2-1 at the break.
The second half was a much more cagey affair with both sides looking to grab a goal which would make or break the game and it was the home side that managed to extend the lead by two goals with a fine strike across the face of the goal from Chris Jones to make it 3-1 on the 55 minute mark. It took until the 83rd minute for The Sports Club to wrap up the points with a headed goal from substitute Tommy Young to make it 4-1 to ensure the Aycliffe side remain joint top of the league going into the cup break. Next weekend sees the Sports Club travel to Stanley in the County Cup hoping to take their league form into the game after scoring 13 goals in the 3 games to date.
