Phil Wilson says he expects to see more demolitions in Aycliffe’s town centre coming soon as part of its long-term redevelopment.
Our MP has told Aycliffe Today the row of shops at the Beveridge Arcade end of the town – excluding the arcade – from the post office down to the town clock will be pulled down, as will the “iconic” ramp.
It’s hoped the changes will open the town centre up and make it more attractive and accessible.
In a video interview with Aycliffe Today, Mr Wilson said: “The row of shops at the other end of the town (opposite the new Aldi site) will eventually be demolished so the whole shopping centre will be opened up at both ends.
“Now when you go past it, and you’re not from the area, you wouldn’t think it was a shopping centre. It’s inside-out, the shops aren’t facing outwards, they face inwards.
“The ramp will be coming down, we should start seeing that in the next few months, so it will be a much better site that it is now.”
