Fans of Newton Aycliffe are once more uniting in support of their football team as they embark on a Sponsored Walk to watch their club tackle reigning Northern League Champions Spennymoor Town.
The trip, measuring nine miles, mirrors that taken by 18 fans and staff members last November, which helped raise over £1,600 for the club to support its varying on and off-field projects.
The walk – dubbed “Marching on Together” – is the first of four planned excursions during this campaign, and organiser Barry Waters is hoping for a similar, if not better result to that of last Autumn.
“Last year, like a lot of our events, we piloted things to see if we could operate them more frequently as the club grew,” said Waters
“To have 18 supporters, including club staff, walk in what was horrific conditions last November was testament to the support this club has gathered in recent years.
“We raised over £1600 last time out which was remarkable at the first time of asking, and with a few key incentives to walkers this time round, we see no reason why we can’t emulate that figure.”
The walk will take place on Saturday September 1, 2012, starting at Moore Lane Park and ending at the Brewery Field, home of the Moors.
The most popular route taken last time was along the A167 past Ferryhill, turning left at Thinford past Green Lane, but fans are free to plan alternative routes should they favour.
Waters added: “Fans can start their walk when they wish. Last year some began at the crack of dawn and arrived in Spennymoor shortly after opening time in one of the local bars, in time to take on board liquid refreshments!
“We appreciate others may have commitments early on a Saturday, so all we ask is that those who are willing to partake, simply complete their route in time to enjoy the game against one of the league’s true heavyweight sides.
“As a gesture, Newton Aycliffe FC will ensure all walkers receive free entry to the match, and those raising certain incremental amounts of money, will also reap the benefits in a new loyalty scheme operated by the football club.”
