Police are appealing for witnesses after a man tried to steal an 84-year-old woman’s handbag in Newton Aycliffe.
The incident happened on Greenwell Road on Sunday February 5, at approximately 1.30pm.
The elderly woman suffered injuries to her ribs when the robber pulled her to the ground as he attempted to make off with her bag.
The robber fled the scene empty handed in the direction of Central Avenue and headed towards the Thames Centre.
The man is described as being between 18 and 20 years old and wearing dark clothing.
Police are also keen to speak to a woman who helped the 84-year-old to her feet after the attack.
DC Anne Wraith, from Newton Aycliffe’s Serious Crime Unit, said: “This was a particularly frightening attack, one that has left her shaken. We are urging anyone with any information to come forward.
“We would urge the lady who assisted the victim to contact police as she may be able to help us identify the attacker.”
Anyone with any information should contact Durham Constabulary on 101 and ask to speak to DC Anne Wraith.
