A bionic ear, free hearing tests and interactive displays will be among the attractions at an event in Durham this month.
The Sensory Support Awareness Day, at County Hall on Wednesday March 28 (between 9am and 4pm) will showcase the help available to people who have sight or hearing impairment or who are deaf and blind.
Activities will include the Bionic Ear Show, an interactive, educational show, which looks at how sound travels through the ear to the brain, what happens in different parts of the hearing system and how individuals can protect their hearing.
The Action for Blind People information bus will be on-site with interactive displays and equipment, while Deafness Research UK will be providing free hearing screening to people over the age of 16. Screenings take about five to 10 minutes and up to six people can be screened at one time.
Other organisations being represented at the event include Action on Hearing Loss, County Durham Society for the Blind and Partially Sighted, Guide Dogs UK, Durham Deafened Support, Equipment Advice Service, Blind Life in Durham, Birmingham Institute for the Deaf, The Rae Brothers (Langley Moor Housing Project) and Sarobec.
Places for the Bionic Ear Show should be booked in advance by contacting the council’s sensory support team on 03000 263 940.
The Action for Blind People information bus will also be at Castle Dene Shopping Centre, Peterlee, on Tuesday, 27 March and at Morrisons car park, Barnard Castle, on Thursday, 29 March, between 9.30am and 4pm.
