Horndale Residents Association was highly commended at Durham County Council’s recent Environment Awards.
The voluntary group was nominated by Cllr John Clare for what was a strong Community Partnership category.
The association’s chairman Philip Clark said: “John nominated us in recognition of our work in the community bulb planting, litter picking, bus trips, fun days, working with other residents groups, Autism Centre, Food Bank, Greenfield Community and Arts College, Woodham Community centre (defib project), Syrian refugees, local health groups and many more. We also work with Livin, Police, Councils and Councillors to improve the lives of everyone living in our community.
“It was a very strong category and showcased lots of great work being carried out across County Durham, and although we didn’t win we reached the last six and were Highly Commended.
“It was a pleasure and privilege to attend the evening and we thank John and those who supported him in the nomination.”
The awards, now in their 29th year, are organised by The County Durham Environment Partnership to recognise great design, environmental guardianship and community spirit.
Durham Cathedral came out top in the Built Environment and Craftmanship categories and went on to win one of two outstanding awards.
REfUSE Durham, a not-for-profit social enterprise café that makes meals from food that would otherwise be binned, won in the Greener Business and Waste Management categories and received the second outstanding award.
Cllr Simon Henig, Chair of the County Durham Environment Partnership, said: “Congratulations to everyone who was shortlisted this year, the range of entries was fantastic. What all of these finalists are doing is making County Durham a better place for everyone.”
