Police have confirmed the fire in Newton Aycliffe earlier this week is not being treated as suspicious.
A 65-year-old woman died in hospital after the fire at Honister Place on Monday afternoon, while her 37-year-old son survived and has since been released from Darlington Memorial.
Police are still yet to officially confirm their identities, but Aycliffe Today understand they are Ann Bradshaw and her son, Ian.
A joint investigation is still being carried out by Durham Police and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service to determine the cause of the fire.
It’s been reported that Mrs Bradshaw and her son were hoarders, and firefighters’ efforts to free them from the blaze were hampered by debris blocking their doorways.
Meanwhile, one of their former next door neighbours, Lee Bailey, yesterday told Aycliffe Today how he tried to warn local environmental health officials about potential fire hazards at the house – but his fears went unnoticed.
