The Government’s announcement this morning has revealed the long-awaited Hitachi contract will actually bring more than 900 jobs to Newton Aycliffe.
The initial plans for the Intercity Express Programme (IEP) outlined Hitachi’s new factory will bring 200 new jobs in its construction and 500 once completed.
However, the Government’s press release, issued at around 7am this morning and published shortly after on Aycliffe Today, has confirmed Hitachi’s £77m factory on Amazon Park will create 730 full-time jobs when it’s open for business in 2014, plus thousands more in the supply chain.
“It’s tremendous news,” said Phil Wilson MP, who helped to realise the Agility Consortium deal, pictured at the Amazon Park site next to Aycliffe Business Park.
“The whole package is a major deal for Aycliffe and the whole region, and the extra jobs announced this morning is just a further boost.”
