Teenage girls can meet women leading the way in science, technology, engineering and maths, at a free event at Aycliffe Business Park later this month (June).
Organised by UTC South Durham, the event – on Wednesday 29th June – is designed to demonstrate to girls aged 13-16 the exciting career options available, with talks by female trailblazers in the sector.
Husqvarna manufacturing director Caraline Robinson and Stephanie Bartle, astrophysicist from Durham University, are among the speakers, and delegates can also hear about the experiences of Hydram Sheet Metalwork apprentices – Hayley Scarr and Sophy Bage.
The new school’s deputy principal Jenny Trapp (pictured), herself a former air traffic controller, will be on hand to meet delegates and speakers on the day, as will faculty director Jak Heslop and workplace learning manager Catherine Purvis-Mawson.
Jenny said: “I know from personal experience the fascinating career options available in the high-tech sector for students with an interest in STEM subjects.
“Given that we have so many inspirational women in the north east, who have carved successful careers in science, technology, engineering and maths, it’s an honour to host them at Newton Aycliffe.
“I’m sure that the girls attending will be inspired by the success of these women and I urge any girls in years 8 – 11 to sign up and come along to find out more about the range of lucrative career opportunities open to women with qualifications in the STEM subjects.”
The event takes place from 4.30pm – 6.30pm on 29 June, at the Xcel Centre on Aycliffe Business Park.
