People who own off-road bikes are being asked to make them identifiable in case they get stolen.
As there is no statutory obligation to register ownership of off-road bikes, they will not appear on the Police National Computer.
This means that if a bike is stolen then recovered, police can have difficulty reuniting it with its owner.
But the DVLA, which operates the Off Road Register, will register the engine and frame number with owner details onto the Police National Computer. The service is free but does require proof of ownership to register.
“It’s also a good idea for people to take a photo of their machine and make a note of any distinguishing features, and mark the machine up with their home post code in a place hidden from everyday sight,” says Andy Davies, stolen vehicle examiner from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit.
“It’s bad enough having property stolen in the first place, but when we recover items and can’t find the rightful owners it’s very frustrating.”
