Gary Farley admits it was a relief to finally make a breakthrough in the club’s search for new signings – and is delighted with their new recruits.
The Aycliffe chairman and Allan Oliver, their manager, have been working tirelessly behind the scenes over the last month, trying to tempt a clutch of exciting players to join the Newtonians.
They made their breakthrough last week, with former Hartlepool United midfielder Martin Young and ex-Whitley Bay winger Kris Hughes joining the club.
And Farley told Aycliffe Today: “We’re over the moon.
“A lot of hard work has gone in to it, particularly by Allan. It’s always nice to get your first signing on board, first Martin and then Kris.
“We’d been talking to them for a while, and it’s sometimes difficult to get them across the line, but they had a look at our set-up and they’re delighted to be on board.”
The double signing was the end result of countless hours of hard work by Farley and Oliver – much of which goes unseen by supporters.
“We’re out most nights, the phone never stops, but that’s football and pre-season,” added Farley.
“So it’s nice to get a breakthrough. We’ve got two or three others we’ve spoken to and waiting for answers back, but fingers crossed we’ll get some positive news soon.
“We only want players here who are here for the right reasons, but they’re looking forward to it – it’s exciting times for the club.”
