A European axe-throwing event will be held in Newton Aycliffe this week for the first time.
Aycliffe-based Valhalla North Axe Throwing are hosting the first annual UK Open IATF Grand Slam Tournament on Friday and Saturday (August 18 and 19).
It will be the first tournament of its kind in Europe, and will see people coming from across Europe, the US and Canada to compete at Valhalla North’s premises on Aycliffe Business Park.
The International Axe Throwing Federation (IATF) have awarded this tournament Grand Slam status, making Valhalla one of only six venues in the world hosting the highest tier of tournament other than the International Championships in Toronto.
“So this is a huge deal for us, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham and the UK!” said Valhalla North director Kat Howe.
“This tournament will form part of the new road to the International Axe Throwing Championships (IATC) 2024 and see the top four finishers in the UK Open European Grand Slam earning spots in the final round of IATC 2024 in Toronto.
“The main tournament will take place on Saturday, August 19, but we will also be hosting other tournaments over the weekend for people to get involved in.
“We are also welcoming spectators throughout the weekend free of charge, so feel free to come down, have a beer and watch the action unfold.
“We are looking for and welcoming sponsors for the event, and have sponsorship packages available.
“This is a great chance to support a small business within the ABP community, without spending too much, with sponsorship packages starting from as little as £100.”
