It has been announced that the Treasury’s new Northern Economic Campus will be moving to Darlington.
This is part of Downing Street’s plan to relocate more than 22,000 civil servants out of London by 2030 as part of the Government’s continued levelling up agenda.
The move will see 750 senior civil servants move to Darlington and senior officials, including the Chancellor, will spend a substantial amount of time in the town.
Darlington fought off tough competition from Newcastle, Leeds and Bradford but has emerged as the successful location for the Northern division of the Treasury.
Darlington MP Peter Gibson said: “This is a truly fantastic day for Darlington and Teesside.
“The Northern Chancellor has done an outstanding job in supporting families and businesses throughout the pandemic and continues to deliver on Northern priorities.
“The chancellor has really delivered for Darlington. Bringing the heart of Government to our town shows faith and trust in what we have to offer, and clearly shows the Government’s commitment to levelling up.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the jobs and investment that this move will bring with it. It is a sign of positive changes to come and I look forward to welcoming the team to Darlington.
“I also look forward to hearing from estate agents in Darlington that they’ve been taking calls from Sir Humphrey.”
