Both our cricket teams ended their bad run of form with impressive victories at the weekend…
Saturday 16th July – NYSD Division 2
Shildon 1st XI v Newton Aycliffe 1st XI – weather was warm and sunny. Shildon won the toss and chose to bat first.
Shildon 1st XI 32 all out after 20.1 overs
Mark Woodhead 7 for 21 and Jack Slatcher 3 for 10
Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 35 for 1 after 5 overs
Michael Howe 18 not out and Sam Telford 11 not out
Newton Aycliffe tore up the form book with an awesome 9 wicket victory away at second in the table Shildon. Fast bowler Mark Woodhead (sponsored by Michaela’s Nails) was quite rightly named man of the match after finishing with the outstanding figures of 7 for 21, which is the best bowling figures by an Aycliffe player this season. The much needed 20 points gained from this famous win over their near neighbours takes their total to 173 and helps to keep the first team out of the second division relegation zone.
Saturday 16th July – NYSD Division 3
Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI v Yarm 2nd XI – weather was warm and sunny. Aycliffe won the toss and decided to bat first.
Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 166 all out after 48.2 overs
Tony Travis 47, Joe Teasdale 28, Stephen Sweeney 23 and Dylan Tribley 23
Yarm 2nd XI 163 all out after 45.3 overs
Stephen Sweeney 4 for 19 and Ryan Patrick 3 for 17
Aycliffe turned the match around and won an exciting game by just 3 runs at home to Yarm 2nd XI when it looked as though the visitors were easing to victory in the NYSD 3rd division. Veteran Tony Travis rolled back the years with a vintage performance with the bat and top scored for Aycliffe with 47 runs from 83 balls, including 7 boundaries and was given the man of the match award for his efforts. However special mention must go to both Stephen Sweeney (4 for 19) and Ryan Patrick (3 for 17) for some excellent bowling at the death to help earn Aycliffe the maximum 25 points for this memorable victory.
