Newton Aycliffe’s cricket team edged closer to promotion after they got back to winning ways at the weekend.
The club’s first team beat Wolviston’s second team with a nine-wicket victory at the Sports Club on Saturday.
And a double-bill of home games this Bank Holiday weekend could see Aycliffe all-but clinch promotion to the NYSD League second division at the first time of asking.
In showery, cool conditions, Aycliffe lost the toss and were asked to bowl first.
Wolviston managed 123 all out from 44.5 overs, with Sam Telford taking three for 24, Luke Telford three for 37 and Sean Morgan two for nine.
Sam Telford claimed the man-of-the-match award when he complemented his three wickets with 56 not out as Aycliffe chalked up 124 from 18 overs.
Luke Telford also scored 32 and Chris Palmer was 28 not out.
The win took Aycliffe to 288 points and consolidates their position at top of the NYSD third division.
Aycliffe’s second team were beaten by 193 runs at Billingham Synthonia’s third XI on Sunday.
Synners scored 260 for six, with Dan Weldon taking six for 33, but Aycliffe were bowled out for 67.
