‘Drive slowly and park responsibly’ is the message to parents and other drivers involved in the daily school run across County Durham and Darlington.
With schools returning after the half term break, and as part of Child Safety Week [1-7 June], Ron Hogg, Durham’s Police and Crime Commissioner is urging all drivers to slow down and take extra care during school opening and closing times, to reduce the risk of an accident.
Improving road safety is one of the key areas that Ron is focusing on in his Police and Crime Plan 2015-17. He said:
“The safety of our young people is everyone’s priority and every child has a right to be safe on our roads when travelling to and from their school.
“Whilst most adults are responsible during the school run, Child Safety Week is an ideal opportunity to remind people of the risk. Nobody wants to cause a child to be injured, either by parking illegally too close to a school, blocking a footpath or speeding, but sadly accidents to occur.
“Slowing down, or parking just one street further away could make all the difference to a child’s life.”
In December last year, Ron supported Durham County Council’s decision to introduce a 20mph limit outside over 30 schools across the County, which will help to keep more young people safe.
