Olympic hopeful Jason Steele is getting behind a campaign urging people to donate £1 to his local non-league football club.
The Middlesbrough goalkeeper is supporting his hometown side, Northern League outfit Newton Aycliffe, in their ‘Give Us A Quid!’ fundraising drive.
They’re encouraging football supporters and Aycliffe fans who can’t get to their games to donate at least £1 each, which will go towards team-strengthening this summer.

It’s hoped the campaign, launched by Chelsea’s European Cup winner and fellow Newtonian Ross Turnbull last week, will raise thousands of pounds for the County Durham club, who have set up a specific PayPal account so fans can make easy and secure online payments.
The cash will help them try to improve on their ninth-place finish last season after their rise through the non-league pyramid system in recent years, which has seen them climb three leagues in four years.
Steele, Boro’s current number one who’s hoping to make it in Stuart Pearce’s Team GB team for this summer’s Olympics, is Aycliffe born and bred.
The 21-year-old told Aycliffe Today: “It’s a great opportunity for everyone to play their part.
“People can’t always get down to games, but this is a chance for them to show their support.
“Times are hard for everyone, not just for Northern League clubs, but generally for everyone, so even if it is just a quid to help the club during pre-season, just things like cutting the grass, little things like that will really help the club, so hopefully we can get a few donations.”
