Newton Aycliffe’s 2021 cricket season got under way at the weekend. Here’s Lee Weldon’s round-up…
Saturday 17th April – NYSD Division 2
Blackhall 1st XI v Newton Aycliffe 1st XI – weather was sunny and mild. Blackhall won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 127 all out after 43.5 overs
Jack Slatcher 32, Matty Greaves 24 and Joe Haines 18
Blackhall 1st XI 131 for 1 after 24.3 overs
George Slatcher 1 for 35
Aycliffe’s first team were well beaten by nine wickets in the season’s opening game away at an impressive looking Blackhall 1st XI.
Jack Slatcher (pictured above, sponsored by Tina and Dean Greaves) top scored for Aycliffe with a gritty 32 from 99 balls faced and special mention must go to 15 year old Matty Greaves who also batted well scoring a much needed 24 runs.

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI v Billingham Synthonia 2nd XI – weather was sunny and mild. Newton Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Billingham Synthonia 2nd XI 199 for 8 after 40 overs
Joe Teasdale 4 for 59, Leo Mercy 2 for 31 and Harrison Pearson 1 for 19
Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 152 for 8 after 40 overs
Sean Morgan 71, Thomas Dearden 21 and Leo Mercy 17 not out
A very young Aycliffe 2nd XI, containing no fewer than seven juniors held out for an excellent draw at home to a very experienced Billingham Synthonia 2nd XI in their opening game of the season.
Sean Morgan (sponsored by Unison) batted superbly and top scored with a career best 71 from 102 balls and his eye catching innings included ten well hit boundaries.
