Newton Aycliffe 0, Bishop Auckland 2
By Dave Strickland
Newton Aycliffe were knocked out of the FA Vase after losing a replay 2-0 at home to Bishop Auckland.
They started well and were the better side in a goalless first half. Kurt Mattthews and Ian Ward had good chances early on, but both missed the target.
The Bishops came into the game, with Patton and Ryder also unable to hit the target from good positions.
Aycliffe then had a good spell of pressure, and Bishops were grateful to keeper Liversedge for two excellent saves on the half hour.
Both sides had further chances before half-time, but couldn’t make the breakthrough.
Bishops came out strongly in the second half, and put a lot of pressure on the home goal.
Aycliffe did have chances from counter attacks, mostly led by man-of-the match Shaun Hudson, with Stuart Thompson and Marc Costello both missing the target.
Eventually, however, Bishops’ pressure told; Fryatt went on a mazy run and beat keeper Daniel Scott in the 77th minute.
Bishops were awarded a penalty three minutes from time, which Patton converted for 2-0.
Aycliffe’s next game is at home to West Auckland in the league on Saturday (September 8, 3pm).
