Ryhope Colliery Welfare 3, Newton Aycliffe 2
By Dave Strickland
Newton Aycliffe slipped up when they went down 3-2 away to Ryhope Colliery Welfare on Tuesday night.
They started slowly and went behind on 22 minutes when Weirs hit a low shot into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the penalty box.
Aycliffe got going and equalised on the half hour when a good move down the right ended with Liam Jarvie squaring the ball to Dean Thexton to finish well.
Aycliffe got on top and had further efforts from Thexton and Wood. They went ahead three minutes before half time when Shaun Ryder hit a shot from distance and it looped into the top of the net after a deflection.
Aycliffe never really got going in the second half and conceded two more goals. Woods scored a header from a corner on 58 minutes.
On 65 minutes, Devlin got on the end of a lobbed shot and scrambled it into the corner of the net.
Aycliffe made a double substitution with quarter of an hour to go, with Jake Petitjean and Johnson Ballan coming on.
Aycliffe pressed for the equaliser, with man-of-the-match Marc Costello prompting many attacks, but the Ryhope defence led a charmed life and they hung on for the win.
Aycliffe’s next match is away to North Shields on Saturday (Dec 7, 3pm)
