Newton Aycliffe 2, North Shields 4
By Dave Strickland
Newton Aycliffe suffered a 4-2 defeat at home to North Shields on Saturday.
They started well in the gusty conditions, and Tom Gavin put them ahead on eight minutes with a screamer into the top of the net, after a good lay-off by Kurt Matthews.
North Shields started to come into the game, though, and their neat inter-passing style was rewarded when they equalised on 26 minutes, Robinson rifling a low shot past James Winter.
They went to have the better of the remainder of the half, with Winter making a great save for Aycliffe just before the break.
North Shields had the benefit of the wind in the second half, and they took full advantage with three further goals from Day, Robinson and Spooner.
Aycliffe kept plugging away with man-of-the match Marc Costello working hard in midfield.
They pulled a goal back right on the final whistle when a great shot from Wilf Dinsdale hit the crossbar, and bounced down onto the line, where Matty Pennal tapped it in.
Aycliffe’s next game is away to Hebburn Town on Saturday October 20, followed by a cup game away to Durham (at Willington) on Tuesday October 23. The next home game is against Consett on Saturday October 27.
