Newton Aycliffe captain Sean Tarling was close to tears as his close friend Ross Turnbull got his hands on the European Cup on Saturday.
Tarling was among the crowd at the stunning 70,000-capacity Allianz Arena in Munich, along with two of Turnbull’s other pals Lewis Toole and Anthony Moors, as Chelsea recorded a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory to clinch their first Champions League title.
Tarling was this morning preparing to fly back to the UK, and he told Aycliffe Today: “It was just unbelievable!
“The atmosphere was incredible, it was something I’ve never experienced before and don’t think I ever will again.
“Chelsea weren’t at their best, to be fair, and Bayern dominated most of the game. It was frustrating from that point of view.
“But to win it in the way they did was unbelievable. And with Drogba scoring the equaliser and then the winning penalty in what is probably his last game for Chelsea, and the way they won their semi-final against Barcelona, makes you think, maybe it was just meant to be.
“But watching one of your best mates lift the Champions League trophy, wow! You don’t see that every day, do you? I have to admit I was close to tears, it was a proud moment.”
