Newton Aycliffe got their Northern League season back on track with two wins on the spin.
The Newtonians claimed a late derby victory at neighbours Bishop Auckland on Tuesday night (pictured above) thanks to goals by Paul Garthwaite and John Campbell, after Bishops had taken the lead.
It followed a 3-0 win at home to Ryhope on Saturday, when Peter Dixon’s side reached the half-way point of their season.
Both these teams went into Saturday’s match on the back of six consecutive league defeats.
But Aycliffe’s confidence received a boost after only four minutes when Jordan Laidler received a short free-kick from John Campbell, beat 2 players and chipped Ryhope keeper Chris Rookes for 1-0.
There were few chances created until the 26th minute when Campbell scored direct from a free-kick 22 yards out to make it 2-0.
Both sides then had a chance each in quick succession, but keepers Rookes and Brass made good saves.
It was Aycliffe who found the net again on 45 minutes when Campbell hit a long-range shot into the corner of the net, giving Rookes no chance.
Aycliffe are now preparing for their first FA Vase game of the campaign at home to Worksop Town at Moore Lane Park on Saturday – kick-off 3pm ith admission £6 adults and £4 concessions.
