Tow Law Town 0, Newton Aycliffe 2
By Bob Wood
Newton Aycliffe went top of the Ebac Northern League on Saturday thanks to a 2-0 win at Tow Law.
Goals from Liam Jarvie and Marc Costello secured the points – and, with rivals Bishop Auckland not playing until Tuesday night, Aycliffe were able to move clear at the top.
Thanks to recent weather conditions this was Tow Law’s first home game since Bonfire Night and the pitch was heavy.
However, Aycliffe were still able to move the ball about in characteristic fashion and generated several chances.
But the opening goal didn’t arrive until the 39th minute. Callum Munro was felled in the box with the referee immediately pointing to the penalty spot. Liam Jarvie stepped up to take the kick firing straight down the middle.
The second half took a similar pattern to the first with Aycliffe keeper, Adam McHugh, rarely troubled but the visitors not able to capitalise on chances at the other end.
However, the game was put beyond doubt on 76 minutes when a powerful shot from man-of-the-match Liam Adamson hit the post rebounding out of the penalty area. Marc Costello picked up the loose ball on the right with his shot beating the keeper at the near post.
At the final whistle, Aycliffe were able to celebrate moving to the top of the table thanks to their seventh successive league win. It was thanks to another magnificent team effort.
Aycliffe return to the SecuriCorp Stadium on Saturday (February 4) for their next match when Whickham will be the visitors. Kick off at Moore Lane is 3pm with admission £7 adults, £5 concessions & accompanied under 12s free.
