Newton Aycliffe 5, Thornaby 0
By Bob Wood
Newton Aycliffe comfortably beat bottom placed Thornaby at the SecuriCorp Stadium on Saturday.
The crowd were treated to an emphatic display by Brian Atkinson’s side with Eddie Thomas and Liam Jarvie getting two goals each.
The win took Aycliffe to 39 points, maintaining fourth place in Ebac Northern League Division One, and with Ashington one place above and on the same points slipping up at West Auckland.
Aycliffe were never really troubled by a struggling Thornaby but it took almost half an hour before they opened the scoring.
Callum Munro played a ball into the box which saw Thomas combine with Liam Adamson and Marc Costello to beat the defenders and the keeper.
Three minutes later Jarvie broke through the defence, rounding the keeper and slotting the ball home.
Thomas got his second on 37 minutes when the defence failed to clear a cross & he was able to head home.
Two more goals followed in the second half. On 54 minutes Liam Jarvie latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Ethan Wood firing low into the net.
The final goal came from Jake Petitjean. Picking up the ball in midfield Petitjean passed to Jarvie on the wing who promptly returned it. Petitjean’s first time shot from outside the box found the net.
Aycliffe return to Moore Lane on Saturday when they entertain second place Whitley Bay in a rearranged fixture.
