Lee Weldon’s weekly round-up from the wicket…
As Jon and Isabelle Tait made history when they became the first ever father and daughter to play in the same side together for Newton Aycliffe CC, for the club’s second team, it was a mixed bag of results for our teams at the weekend.
Saturday 26th April – NYSD Division 3
Maltby 1st XI v Newton Aycliffe 1st XI – the weather was mild and sunny. Maltby won the toss and chose to bat first.
Maltby 1st XI 228 for 8 after 40 overs
Shashank Garg 4 for 64, Matty Greaves 3 for 40 and Leo Mercy 1 for 43
Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 78 all out after 23.3 overs
Tom Dearden 28, Tez Smit 18 and Dan Heaton 14 not out
After last week’s opening day victory, Aycliffe’s first XI were brought back down to earth with a bump after a thumping defeat by 150 runs away at Maltby 1st XI.
The home side scored an impregnable 228 for 8 in their innings despite some good bowling by Shashank Garg, who took 4 for 64 from his ten overs and Matty Greaves 3 for 40 off ten overs.
In reply, Tom Dearden (sponsored by Kevin Burton) top scored with 28 runs from 26 balls and fellow opener Tez Smit (18 off 16 balls with four boundaries) helped Aycliffe to a solid start at 40 for 0.
However, the innings then fell apart as Aycliffe then lost all ten wickets for the addition of just 38 runs, despite a battling undefeated 14 off 44 balls by Dan Heaton.
Saturday 26th April – NYSD Division 4
Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI v Billingham Synthonia 2nd X – the weather was mild and sunny. Newton Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bat first.
Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 51 all out after 24.2 overs
Tony Travis 15
Billingham Synthonia 2nd XI 55 for 2 after 5.3 overs
Ramzan Hussain 2 for 21
The club’s second team had a day to forget as they were well beaten by a very strong and experienced Billingham side by 8 wickets.
The only bright spots from the game was a defiant 15 off 40 balls with the bat by stand in captain Tony Travis (sponsored by John Wardle) and 2 for 21 with the ball by Ramzan Hussain.
However, the match will be fondly remembered by the Tait family as Jon and Isabelle Tait became the first ever father and daughter to play in the same side together for Newton Aycliffe CC when they turned out for the 2nd team against Billingham.
Sunday 27th April – Hambleton League

Aycliffe’s Women got their season off to a great start with a nail-biting win by just three runs away at Thirsk.
The game went right down to the last over and their victory was secured thanks to a vital run out off the penultimate ball.
Thirteen-year-old Carys Myers had an excellent game for Aycliffe and finished her three over spell with three wickets for just 13 runs.
Special mention must also go to Aycliffe debutant Helen Winpenny who marked the occasion with a stunning catch on the boundary.
