Newton Aycliffe 36, Jarrovians 10
Newton Aycliffe Rugby Club maintained their slim hopes of promotion with a convincing 36–10 victory over Jarrovians in Durham and Northumberland Division Three last weekend.
The weather was dry with little wind, perfect for Aycliffe’s brand of running rugby.
The large Jarrovians pack, as in the previous meeting between the teams, initially had the advantage and scored the first try.
Soon after though, quick ruck ball saw a gaping hole appear in front of James Thacker, he needed no second invitation and crossed the line unopposed; David Gibson added the conversion to give Aycliffe the lead.
Jarrovians fought back and missed a penalty kick at goal, but Aycliffe began to take command. The lead was increased when Lewis McCormick battered his way through three defenders to score near the posts, Gibson again converting.
More quick work saw the ball flung along the back –line; flanker Colin Wooster made the extra link and Ronnie Gilyeat was able to cross for the try in the corner. At half time, Aycliffe led 19 – 5.
In the second half, Aycliffe’s backs found more space and began to make chances, Luke Crossen scoring his first try of the season with a long range try to give Aycliffe the bonus point.
The Aycliffe lineout was dominant and the scrum began to match their opponents after a sticky start. Chris Knight added a try in the corner. After failing to convert a number of overlaps, Aycliffe found some good handling when they put together a continuous passage of play that finished with man-of-the match McCormick adding his second score. Gibson’s conversion extended the lead.
Jarrovians were not finished, though, and spent the last five minutes camped in Aycliffe’s 22, scoring a try with the last play of the match.
Aycliffe visit Richmondshire this Saturday (February 4, 2.15pm).
