The community of Newton Aycliffe have rallied round to help an elderly lady who lost her pension money in the town centre.
Aycliffe police published a post on social media earlier this week about the recently widowed 83-year-old lady who had lost her pension money, believed to be about £230.
The post attracted dozens of comments from the public willing to help.
And as a result, a Go Fund Me page has raised more than £500 to make sure the lady gets her money back.
Nev Jones, founder of Aycliffe Community Spirit who set up the fundraising page, said: “It’s awful when things like this happen, but that’s what your community is for, to help.
“It’s really nice to see local people want to help their neighbours, and that’s what we’re all about – trying to make the town a nice place to live for everyone.”
On Monday, a police statement said: “A vulnerable elderly female has lost a substantial amount of money after withdrawing her pension in the town centre.
“If you find it please do the right thing and hand it in to Newton Aycliffe Police Station, or contact PCSO Jen Atkinson via 101.”
